The Best of 2016: Beauty among the ruins

If I was the type of person who looks for signs of the apocalypse, 2016 might have blown my mind. As it was, I had to turn off the world from time to time in order to salvage my sanity. The first big shocker was Prince's death. Yes, I know … [Read more...]

2016 Oscar Fashions

We can't talk Oscars without first applauding that opening monologue. Wowza, talk about not skirting the issue, Mr Rock. (I believe Fight the Power played as he walked onto the stage.) Chris Rock managed to be funny while putting things in perspective and just flat out saying Hollywood is racist. Very high energy. I felt a bit bad for some presenters who appeared staid and stiff next to him. Of course, I couldn't watch to the end, sleep being more important to me than Hollywood. But I saw ALL the clothes. So onto to the frou frou -- let's talk style! … [Read more...]

Bjütie’s Best of 2015

One of the great joys of reaching the end of the year is all of the lists. Best books of the year lists are the best, but I enjoy it all -- worst trends of 2015, best Instagram pics, most underrated internet cats, everything. New beginnings are the best, but looking back fondly comes in a close second. Here are my personal discoveries of 2015 (not all are of 2015, sometimes I'm a bit slow). Best BOOK I read: … [Read more...]

Disturbing Movies of the 1980s

There's a real oddness at the core of many of the films from my childhood. Was I just young and impressionable or did the movies of the 1980s often delve into the disturbing side of life... sometimes in a very goofy way? It's almost as if filmmakers of the 80s enjoyed exploring dark, unsettling themes, and yet couldn't take them too seriously. The other main theme that comes up often, of course, is class division, often with a love story woven in.  On this Halloween day, the very best of all the holidays, I'd like to revisit some of the strange and wonderful movies of my youth. … [Read more...]

Must Read Memoirs for Foodies

Memoirs are like autobiographies for obsessives. Authors focus in on one tiny part of their lives and, in the process, transmit something of their journey, and hopefully their passions, to the reader. Memoirs really blew up a few years ago and much to my delight because they're my favourite things to read. And when you love food as much as I do, the fact that there's even such a thing as a food memoir is a gift from heaven. Tell me about your life? Yes please. Tell me about your life AND what you ate … [Read more...]

Oscar Fashion 2015: Best and Worst

With a usual bedtime of 9:30, I knew watching the Academy Awards would be a challenge. Quite frankly though, this year's were so uninspiring that I never even made it to 10 o'clock (thereby missing the "equal work for equal pay" speech which should be totally irrelevant in 2015, but there you have it). Thanks to social media and relentless online coverage, I'd had a good look at all of the outfits before the awards had even started. Furthermore, I was able to catch up on the highlights (Glory!) and lowlights (lock box jokes) on Monday. Now I'm up to speed and ready to bring forth my judgement. … [Read more...]

Oscar Fashions 2014: The Sparkly, the Bland, and the Whoopi

How I miss the days when Hugh Jackman or Billy Crystal would belt out over-the-top musical numbers, when contemporary dance performances representing nominated films were not unheard of, and especially when actresses were emboldened to wear extravagant gowns knowing that this was their BIG NIGHT. But now that every time a celebrity steps out to get a chai latte her outfit ends up being … [Read more...]

‘Tis the Season for Cheesy Romantic Comedies

It's 4pm, 3 days before xmas, I'm in my pyjamas, I've not bought a single gift, and ice-pellets have turned the sidewalks into a slip-and-slide. I see no reason to get up from the couch, except maybe to get more food. It's the jolliest time of year! … [Read more...]
